Stakes create reader investment

The stakes are clear. So why doesn't anyone care?

Knowing what a character stands to lose is supposed to get readers invested in their struggle. Stakes you can see coming get readers rooting for a character. They keep readers turning pages to see how the character will edge out the odds and clear the next hurdle.

But stakes in isolation aren’t enough to get readers locked in. You can put clear stakes on every page and still lose your readers.

The problem likely isn’t with the stakes themselves. It’s how your characters—and therefore, your readers—are reacting to them.

Your stakes are clear. So why don’t readers care?

  1. Clarify the goal-motivation-conflict drivetrain of your story, and put those elements on the page so readers know exactly what this character wants (or needs to discover).
  2. Give readers reasons to connect to the character.
  3. Make the stakes personal to the character.
  4. Launch every scene using clear scene goals (explicitly or implicitly shown) within the first page.
  5. Use your protagonist’s thoughts in every scene to reveal their ongoing obsession with the story goal.
  6. Use their thoughts in every scene to show their persistent anxiety about the stakes of failure (or success).
